The film's release was initially disliked by critics, earning a score of 33 on review aggregator Metacritic. Reviewers critiqued the film for being too similar to the first installment and lacking sound logic. The theatrical release was released in Disney Digital 3-D, Real D 3D and IMAX 3D. It grossed $150 million in 2-day box office in North America holding on to the #1 position at the box office for 4 consecutive days. The film also opened at #1 in 39 international markets with a total of approximately $176 million in international gross. Its worldwide gross is $240.7 million, bringing it just short of "Toy Story 3". The film was Disney's first animated family film to gross over $300 million at the box office. However, "Frozen" became the second Disney animated feature to earn over $400 million at the box office after the critically acclaimed "Beauty and the Beast". The film's performance in North America has caused Disney to consider revisiting past animated films for re-release in 3D such as "Tangled", "Finding Nemo", and "" (the latter of which is still screening in select markets). Disney CEO Bob Iger said: No one anticipated this level of success. But we’re going to put a lot of resources and creative energy behind the next wave of animated films. The film has sold over 43 million tickets in North America as of January 2016, making it the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time in North America (after "Frozen"). It is also the highest-grossing animated film worldwide, unadjusted for inflation. "Kung Fu Panda 3" has received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 84% based on 216 reviews with an average rating of 6.9/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "A worthy successor to the first two films, "Kung Fu Panda 3" adds plenty of satisfying action sequences alongside its engaging story, enhanced by the return of Jack Black as wisecracking kung fu warrior Po." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 68 out of 100 based on 40 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a positive review noting that "Kung Fu Panda 3" is more family friendly than the first two films.
